Preliminarily, you would do well to decide on the following-

1. Decide whether you are going to keep the existing flooring
2. Decide which appliances you are going to put in the kitchen and locations.

Flooring- you will have to decide if you are going to keep your existing flooring because normally the cabinets are put in before flooring, so when you will take the old cabinets out you will leave a cabinet footprint. If there is a cabinet footprint and you are not replacing the floor, the kitchen will need to be designed to cover those footprints. Normally, you can just order the same size cabinets that were originally there and that would solve any potential problem. (You can install cabinets over the flooring and in some parts of the country installing cabinets over the flooring is more common)
